On the road in the very cradle of Switzerland:

The Rütli is connected to the founding history of Switzerland for all Swiss people. From the Rütli, you have a wonderful view of Lake Lucerne, Brunnen, and the Mythen mountains. With the all-terrain electric wheelchair JST Mountain Drive, you can comfortably reach the oath site of the old confederates despite the incline.

“We want to be a single people of brothers, in no distress to separate us and danger.” Thus begins Friedrich Schiller in 1804 in his drama “William Tell” the Rütli oath.

At the Rütli, representatives of the original cantons Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden allegedly swore the Rütli alliance in 1291, which established joint action against the foreign bailiffs in their valleys. The Rütli meadow is often called the "cradle of Switzerland" or the founding place of Switzerland today and is of great national importance. The historically significant site is worth visiting not only because of its past: here you can also simply let your soul dangle.

The journey into the founding history of Switzerland begins in Brunnen at the boat station. After taking over the all-terrain electric wheelchair JST Mountain Drive, you will enjoy an approximately ten-minute boat trip across the romantically wild Lake Uri to the Rütli boat station.

From there, the ascent to the Rütli meadow begins – the symbolic birthplace of the confederation. The path leads through lush meadows and, after the first incline, offers a worthwhile detour to the picnic area. From here, a wonderful view of the green-blue Lake Uri opens up.

Back on the main path, continue to the historic oath site where the Rütli oath is said to have taken place in 1291. Since the 19th century, a limestone rock from the canton of Schwyz has stood here, from which three springs flow – a symbol of the original cantons Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden.

Those who continue a little further will reach the upper stable and the Rütli meadow – a particularly atmospheric place to calmly absorb the spirit of the Rütli.

Rütlihaus

A traditional restaurant with a long history awaits you. The hosts pamper you with delicious Swiss specialties. They focus on cooperation with regional producers. Quality and Swiss origin have top priority with the hosts. Enjoy cozy hours in the rustic rooms of the Rütlihaus, under the shady arcades, or on the large garden terrace with a unique view over Lake Uri.
