The Glöggli frog trail in Eich on Lake Sempach is dedicated to the endangered midwife toad, also known as the Glöggli frog. Start at the village pond below the parish church of Eich, signposted with wooden signposts (village public transport connection, parking spaces on Neumattstrasse). The path leads to the Oeleweiher pond and crosses the Römerweg trail.
The Glöggli frog trail is part of a species promotion project and the Eicher circular trail. From March to August, the bell-like calls of the midwife toad can be heard in the evening.

The midwife toad
The midwife toad, also known as the Glöggli frog, was named Animal of the Year in 2013 to draw attention to its decline. Its bell-like call and unique breeding method, in which the male carries the eggs on its back, make it special.
The 4-5 cm frog is gray with a white underside and reddish warts. Its golden eyes with vertical pupils have a magical effect. During the day, the midwife toad hides in burrows and mouse holes, in the evening it searches for insects, woodlice and worms.
The bell-like call serves as a mating call and sounds like a chime from several Glöggli frogs. Experience this fascinating frog and its unique way of life at Lake Sempach!
The Glöggli frog as an endangered species
The midwife toad, also known as the Glöggli frog, is highly endangered in Switzerland. Its population has almost halved in the last 25 years.
The main causes are drained waters, pesticides, fertilizers and diseases. These factors also endanger other amphibian species.
