Illgau - St. Karl-Ibergeregg Circuit

The two high plateaus St. Karl and Oberberg offer a peaceful and powerful calm. The route leads through small, idyllic coniferous forests, past rugged rock formations and alpine huts.

The circular hike starts above the picturesque mountain village of Illgau, at the spiritual place St. Karl. A small cable car takes winter hikers into the secluded landscape, which fills you with its energy. With views of the Schwyz basin, the Muota Valley, and the slopes of the Stoos winter sports resort on the opposite valley side, the hike leads via Eseltritt to Ibergeregg. Although we move quickly forward, we slow down at the same time. After deep calm comes the lively winter sports fun at the family-friendly ski area Ibergeregg. After the ascent here, the view of the Innerschwyz mountain world and the panorama makes the heart beat a little faster. On the way back, we immerse ourselves again in a quieter world in Grossenboden and return peacefully to St. Karl.

Directions & Parking facilities

By car on the A4 to the Schwyz exit, then towards Muotathal to the valley station of the Ried-Illgau cable car or by car towards Muotathal, after the valley station of the funicular follow signs to Illgau.

Parking is available at the valley station of the Ried-Illgau cable car. There are also parking spaces near the church in Illgau. Further parking is available at Hand and at the upper parking lot (Gründel). From there, you can access the winter hiking trail directly.

From Schwyz train station take bus line 501 to the stop Ried (Muotathal), Illgau cable car.

Then take the Illgau–Ried cable car to the village of Illgau. After about 5 minutes on foot, continue with the Illgau–Vorderoberberg cable car to the starting point, mountain station Illgau cable car - St. Karl.

Alternatively: The Ibergeregg bus (Line 505: Schwyz - Ibergeregg - Oberiberg or Oberiberg - Ibergeregg - Schwyz) will run daily again in winter from December 2023! Timetable
