The journey starts in the main town of Uri, Altdorf. Through the beautiful Schächental, motorists reach the pass summit. There, you have a stunning view of the mountain panorama. Then the route continues to Urnerboden, the largest Swiss alpine pasture with up to 1200 cows and an alpine cheese dairy. From Urnerboden, the pass road goes down into the canton of Glarus, to Linthal.
Far beyond the Swiss borders, the legendary Klausen races made a sensation in the 1920s and 1930s. Cars and motorcycles managed the 21.5 km long route on gravel roads at tremendous speed, making it then the most difficult hill climb race in Europe.Â
