Romantic hike above Lake Uri

The Rütli meadow is truly a special place, enclosed by forest, right on the lake and surrounded by steep rock walls. Heading north, we then pass through a truly romantic forest. New views of the lake and mountains open up again and again. As soon as the view opens westwards towards Rigi, Lucerne and Pilatus, we are right in the middle of Switzerland’s most beautiful postcard landscape. The return trip by boat from Beckenried becomes a special dessert treat at the end.

By boat, we reach the mysterious cradle of the Swiss Confederation: the Rütli meadow. From here we hike through a romantic landscape heading north. Soon we arrive at the historic youth hostel Seelisberg. The view stretches over Lake Uri, the Fronalpstock to the two Mythen and further to the Urmiberg. As soon as the path turns west around the ridge, the view opens towards Rigi and Lucerne with the Pilatus. We reach the hamlet of Volligen. The restaurant has one of the most beautiful viewing terraces in all of Central Switzerland. We continue hiking through alpine meadows and a primeval forest to Beckenried.

Directions & Parking facilities

Getting there
Flüelen is conveniently accessible via the A1 motorway in half an hour from Lucerne. Brunnen can be reached from Zurich in 45 minutes via the A4.
Parking
In Flüelen, there is a large parking lot near the train station; you can reach the boat station on foot in two minutes. In Brunnen, there is a large parking lot in the middle of the village, only five minutes from the boat station.
Public transportation
We reach the Rütli easily by boat from Flüelen or from Brunnen. From Beckenried, you can also return to the starting point by boat.

Additional information

Those who want to shorten the hike can either walk from the youth hostel to Seelisberg and take the Treib-Seelisberg-Bahn to Treib, where there is a connection to the SGV shipping line. It is also possible to hike from Volligen to Treib in about 15 minutes and board the boat there.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

On the farm of Daniela and Kobi Truttmann-Burckhardt, Dexter cows graze with their calves. This cattle breed, originally from Ireland, is smaller and lighter than the local brown cattle breed. Therefore, it is excellently suited for use on the steep meadows at Lake Uri.

The Waldstätterweg, which leads from Brunnen around the entire Lake Lucerne to the Rütli, was reopened in May 2015. You can find more information on the Waldstätterweg website.
