From Studen, the second stage leads through the Breitried/Schützenried moorland to the Sihlsee. After an ascent to the Sattelchöpfli, an impressive panorama of the Sihlsee and Lake Zurich opens up before the descent to Willerzell.

The route starts in the village of Studen SZ and follows the canalised Sihl through Breitried and Schützenried, a moorland of national importance. This wide plain gives an idea of what the high valley looked like before the damming of the Sihlsee. The Sihlsee is the largest reservoir in Switzerland by area and still shapes the landscape today. The path initially follows the shore to Euthal and to the second bridge over the lake. Since the moor areas on the shore prevent a direct route, the path climbs in Ruostel up to the Sattelchöpfli. At 1336 m above sea level, a wide view opens back to the Sihl valley mountains and out over the Sihlsee, Lake Zurich, and on to Zurich. The descent to Willerzell is varied with constant lake views.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

The viewpoint at the Sattelchöpfli is ideal for a break – here the view extends over the Glarus and Schwyz Alps far out into the Zurich region.

Safety guidelines

  • Sections along the road at the Sihlsee require attention.
  • Stay on the marked paths in the moor area, as shortcuts damage protected areas.
  • Watch for weather changes in the pre-Alpine area.
