One of the most charming and scenically unique hiking areas in the canton of Uri is the Maderanertal. With its diverse flora, typical alpine fauna, and rushing streams, the side valley is well known far beyond the cantonal borders.

The starting point of this mountain hike is the mountain station of the Golzern cable car. On a well-developed road, we easily reach Seewen. Now we follow the path to Lake Golzern. Then the mountain trail ascends: Above Würzen it branches off onto the hut trail to the Windgällengütte AACZ. Through the lightly wooded mountainside, the path leads to the very popular Windgällenhütte.

We continue the hike into the rear Maderanertal on the slightly descending path section towards Stäfel, Öfeli, and Tritt. From Tritt, the path leads down in about a dozen hairpin bends to the SAC Hotel Maderanertal near Balmenegg. In the good old days, the SAC Hotel Maderanertal enjoyed international fame thanks to its location, and even today the accommodation is always worth a stop due to its idyllic location. From Balmenegg, the signpost directs us to Balmenschachen and through the Kuhalp Stössi. On the historic valley path along the wild Chärstelenbach, we reach the valley station of the Golzern cable car, the destination of the hike. This route offers magnificent views of glaciers and the surrounding majestic three-thousand-meter peaks.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

On beautiful days the rush to the cable car in the morning is very great. Start the route after lunch and spend the night at the Windgällenhütte. The evenings at this mountain hut are fantastic. The next morning you can continue your route at a leisurely pace.
