For over 700 years, the protected forest has shielded the people of Andermatt from avalanches, rockfalls, and floods. The themed route offers an interesting insight into the protected forest.

From the village bridge, the path leads via Mariahilf Chapel to the entrance of the protective forest. On the hike through Urserenwald, you encounter several information boards that provide a lot of interesting information about the protective forest and its function. The destination, Gurschenalp with the chairlift station, is reached soon after the tree line. From the path, you then walk to the large cross at Mändli, directly below a cable car mast, where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Urserntal. After a rest, you descend the 'Gigen' back to Andermatt. The narrower trail passes plants, meadows, and streams. Along the way, you can enjoy a view of Hospental and the mountain scenery.

The forest above Andermatt has had special significance for centuries and was already placed under protection in 1397.  The reason for this: The forest offered and still offers protection against avalanches, rockfalls, and floods.
