The cross-country ski trail to Tannalp runs through hilly terrain and is considered quite snow-safe due to its altitude. Fascinating, besides the view of the Obwalden mountain peaks, are also the ice fishermen on the frozen lakes along the route.

The cross-country trail entrance is located directly next to the panoramic lift at Melchsee. Before putting on skis, the short lift ride up to the viewing platform, just under forty meters above Melchsee, is worthwhile. Up there awaits a view of the impressive Obwalden mountain panorama, which on the east side is flanked by the Titlis and stretches over the Wendenstöcke, Balmeregghorn to the west side to Brünighaupt. Below, at dizzying depths, lies the lake.

The circuit route to Tannalp and back is peppered with gentle ascents and descents. At the foot of Bonistock, the trail first leads along the Tannensee to the hamlet of Tannalp. What you do not find here despite the name: coniferous trees. Where cows spend their Alpine summer, in winter you find an untouched, treeless landscape with views of the Engstlenalp and the Gental.

Those who do not want to complete the long route in one go can take a culinary break at the mountain inn Tannalp before returning to Melchsee-Frutt or a contemplative pause next to the chapel. A second chapel is reached just before the destination. Located on a peninsula in the reservoir lake, the Melchsee chapel is a real eye-catcher. If you are lucky, you can also observe a rare sport being practiced on the two frozen lakes along the route: Frutt is a mecca for ice fishermen.
