Discover the small town gem Schwyz
The little town of Schwyz, capital of the canton to which it lends its name, stands in the pyramid-shaped shadows of the majestic Mythen mountains.
It is home to the Swiss National Museum and the Museum of the Swiss Charters of Confederation, which house two nationally and historically important collections of documents and objects – including the famous Federal Charter of 1291, which stood as the constitutional document of Switzerland for centuries. After the village was almost completely destroyed in the catastrophic fire of 1642, its centre was rebuilt in the patrician style. As a result, grand buildings and villas dating from the 17th and 18th centuries define the village today. Schwyz is also home to one of Switzerland’s most popular exports: the famous red Swiss Army knife, which originated here in 1897.
